Lucy E. Mathon, of Lindenhurst, formerly of Babylon, died July 13, 2004. She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Mathon was born Lucy Burkhardt on August 30, 1916 in Maspeth, Queens and moved to West Babylon with her family when she was five-years-old.

She lived there until her marriage in 1938 to August J. Mathon, the co-owner of the former Brooklawn Hotel located on Montauk Highway in Babylon. The couple lived in Babylon until 1948 when they moved to Lindenhurst. Mr. Mathon predeceased his wife in 1979. The couple were married 40 years.

"My mother was a gentle woman," said her daughter Leone. "She was overflowing with wisdom and kindness, loved and respected by all. Her family and friends will always cherish the many stories of her life she so loved to tell."

In addition to her daughter Leone Mathon of Lindenhurst, Mrs. Mathon is survived by her sons, James Mathon of St. Petersburg, Florida and John Mathon of West Babylon and by her daughters-in-law Theresa and Janet Mathon. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Bree Drushel of Colchester, VT; Chad Mathon of Smithtown; James and Michael Mathon of St. Petersburg, Florida, as well as by her great grandchildren, Alan, Olivia and Jack Mathon. Her brother John Burkhardt of Lindenhurst, and her sister Ruth Haas of West Babylon also survive her. She was predeceased by her sister Dorothy Spelman and her brothers, William and Charles Burkhardt.

Mrs. Mathon reposed at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip until July 19, when a celebration of liturgy was said by Father James Vlaun at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church in West Babylon. Interment followed at Long Island National cemetery at Pinelawn, LI.

The family has asked that donations in Mrs. Mathon’s name be made to St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School Scholarship Fund, 1170 Montauk Highway, West Islip, New York 11795.
