Man shot during robbery attempt at South Shore Mall, Bay Shore

Suffolk County Police Department Third Squad Detectives have charged two Bay Shore teenagers with shooting a man during a robbery attempt.

On July 9, 9:30 p.m. Edward Fortunato of Bay Shore was with a female friend and has just left the South Shore Mall, when they were accosted by two male teenagers. The teens announced a robbery and demanded Fortunato’s wallet. One of the teens shot Fortunato in the leg. They fled without any proceeds. Police Officer John Vitale of the Third Precinct responded to the call and observed two suspects matching the description. Both suspects fled on foot.  Officer Vitale gave chase and with the assistance of Officer Holliane McDonald, Christopher Verwys and Brian Valentin was able to capture both suspects and recover the weapon. Joshua Ortiz, age 16, of 5 Joseph St., Bay Shore and Stephen Joshua, age 16, of 109 West Bay Shore Rod., Bay Shore, were charged with attempted Robbery 1st Degree, Criminal Use of a Weapon 2nd Degree and Criminal attempted Robbery 1st Degree, Criminal Use of a Weapon 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree. Fortunato is in stable condition at this time.

Both subjects were held overnight a the Third Precinct for arraignment at First District Court, Central Islip.
