Lindenhurst High School boys varsity
volleyball earns playoff berth
Lindenhurst’s varsity boys’ volleyball team, guided by 15-year veteran coach Ken Schnatz, finished the season with a 10-6 League I record (11-6 overall), good enough to earn a playoff berth for the seventh time in eight seasons. According to Schnatz, the strength of the team was its capabilities on offense, specifically, spiking the ball, with "four guys that hit the ball pretty good."
Standout players this season included: Mike Mazzapelle, a three-year varsity starter and All-County player at middle blocker that Schnatz described as "arguably the best middle in Suffolk County"; Mike Rosato, an All-Division second-year starter at setter who led the team in assists; Mike TumSuden, a setter and outside hitter that Schnatz described as "one of the hardest hitters on the team"; Bryan Burke, setter and right-side blocker, who sets and hits well; Jake Lamneck, an outside hitter and excellent scorer; Mark Meyer, an outside hitter and defensive specialist who is an excellent server and passer; and Sal Falcone, the only junior starter, a middle blocker who improved significantly throughout the season.
In the playoffs, Lindy beat West Islip in the first round before losing to Sachem.
