Healey speaks on last months public hearing The November 18 public hearing concerning the extensive development of the South Oaks campus was an excellent forum for all sides to present their opinions and comment on the relevant issues. The proposed plan of development by Long Island Homes, Lowes Corporation and Bristol Health Care will greatly alter our existing open space and infrastructure. If the recent Syosset Mall judgment is any indication of the judicial climate the Town Board may only be able to delay the inevitable. Therefore, it is incumbent on our community to ensure that if development must occur, it is done on our terms. At the public hearing some important issues were addressed such as housing density, conservation easements and distance from wetlands. But much more needs to be corrected. We as a community must make sure that an even greater concern is given to traffic mitigation, protection of the existing commerce, water demands, vegetative buffers, tree replacement, additional dedicated open space and an analysis of the long term effect of tax abatement related to housing. We as a community should make no mistake that, no matter how altruistic the developers appear to be, they are absolutely single minded in their goal to make ambitious profits.
