The high cost of Hussein’s capture The reports that American Coalition Forces captured a beleaguered and baffled Saddam Hussein was great news to greet us on a snowy Sunday morning. The coverage that unveiled on television and radio following that announcement kept many of us, who were already stuck in the house, glued to our television screens or the radio in amazement. There were initial moments of absolute joy, which came from the knowledge that this tyrannical and deadly dictator would no longer be able to reach out, terrorize, intimidate and torture his own people were wonderful. Those were followed by a sense of satisfaction that this man would now reap the justice he so cruelly deprived millions of during his reign of terror. But those moments quickly passed, and we began to think of the very high price we have paid to bring freedom to Iraq and the Iraqi people. More than 400 American lives were lost in that just cause. It was and is a terrible price we continue to pay. Nothing worthwhile comes easy or without a high price. We know that and this new generation of Americans who are serving their country and risking their lives for the preservation of freedom know it too. They continue to struggle in Iraq and in other dark corners of the world including Afghanistan, home to the terrorists who toppled the Twin Towers and murdered more than 3,000 Americans September 11, 2001. We pray that their struggle will be swift and sure; that they are able to bring to justice another tyrant, Osama Bin Laden, and bring an added measure of freedom and peace to the Middle East and the world. We pray for their families and their homecoming. That’s what we are thinking this holiday season. Please send us a letter or e-mail and let us know your thoughts. We will share all of them with our readers.
