West Islip’s student advances to
INTEL International
West Islip High School student Kristen Goodrich, was a semi-finalist in the INTEL Science Talent Search and made history as the district’s first student to do so, has won First Place in the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair.
This accomplishment entitled the senior to advance to INTEL’s International Competition in Kentucky in May. The INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the Olympics of science competition. Over 1,200 students from 40 nations and 48 states will compete for tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips, scholarships and a trip to the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Kristen’s science project is entitled "The Influence of Groundwater Constituents on Initiation of the Growth of Aureococcus Anophagefferens and Competing Phytoplankton." The problem, she wrote, is that microscopic alga, Aurecococcus Anophagefferens, named brown tide for the muddy color it turns the water, first appeared in the Peconic Bay area in 1985. It’s reoccurrence plagues our embayments causing alteration of the bay’s ecology and declimation of Long Island’s traditional fisheries." Her research, analysis and conclusion are on display in the high school main office.
