Nigel C. Potts named new organist at St. Peter’s
The Reverend Canon Dr. Denis C. Brunelle, Rector of St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 500 South Country Road, Bay Shore, has called Nigel C. Potts to be St. Peter’s new organist and director of music. After receiving more than 30 applications for the position from across the country and England, Canon Brunelle and the search committee decided to bring this extraordinary talent to the Bay Shore and Diocese of Long Island communities. Nigel Potts was born and educated in New Zealand where he was a boy chorister and later organ scholar of Wellington Cathedral. In 1991 Potts achieved his diplomas from the Conservatorium of Music in Wellington and the Trinity College of Music, London, England. In 1992 he was awarded the Gillian Weir Waitangi Foundation Scholarship and move to England to take up the organ scholarship at Blackburn Cathedral and later at Lichfield Cathedral, where he accompanied the Cathedral Choir both on a European tour and on a CD for Priory Records. In May 2002 Nigel Potts graduated with a master’s of music from the School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University, where he studied with Professor Thomas Murray. As a concert organist, Nigel Potts has given over 70 recitals spanning four continents, performing in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, in major cities across the USA and Canada and in most major English.
