Clara Argento, 75, 35-year resident of Lindenhurst Clara Argento, a 35-year resident of Lindenhurst, and a former religious education teacher at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, West Babylon, died Thursday, July 25 from complications of a stroke she suffered four years ago. She was 74 years old. Mrs. Argento was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Brooklyn where she met her husband John. The couple moved to Ozone Park, Queens, and then to Lindenhurst in 1967. She was described by family and friends as a woman with style and a great sense of humor. "Having her family around her was one of the most important things to my mother," said her daughter Anne Jackvony of Lindenhurst. "With my father, my mother made Sunday dinner a tradition with family and friends. Everyone was always welcome." "There is hardly a memory I have over the last 35 years that doesn’t include my friend Clara," said Carolyn James, a neighbor in Lindenhurst. "When I got my first job, she was there; when my children were growing up, she was there and whenever I needed something, she was there. Her generosity was boundless." Over the years she lived in Lindenhurst, Mrs. Argento was the unofficial chauffeur for the children on her block. She often drove or picked them up from school, worked as a boy scout leader and spent hours as a volunteer patterning children with brain disorders. "She was the one my children would go to practice their spelling words," said James. "There was a small army of girls in Lindenhurst who grew up wearing Clara’s colorful ponchos, trimmed in Angora. She even taught many of them to knit and crochet themselves." "She was so much fun and we did so many things together over the years," said Sis Gregorio of Oceanside, a friend of Mrs. Argento’s since the two were teenagers growing up in Brooklyn together. "She was my best friend and was always there for me when I needed her." In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Argento is survived by her sons, John and his wife Debbie, and Victor, all of Manhattan. Her grandchildren, Michael and Gabriella of Lindenhurst, also survive her, as does her sister Maggie Rosati and her husband Joe of Amity Harbor and her brother Richard Mineo of Florida.; her sisters-in-law, Emmie Mineo of Copiague, Catherine Mineo of Florida, Louise Mineo of Brooklyn and Judy Mineo of Florida. She was predeceased by her husband John and by her siblings, Gloria, Jessie, Rosie, Victor Jackie, Joe, Frank, and Peter. Mrs. Argento reposed at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home, Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst until Monday, July 29 when a Mass of Christian Burial was said at Our Lady of Grace. Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery.
