Lindenhurst grad Romeo selected in major league draft
by Ronald A. Busse

Lindenhurst High School Class of 2002 graduate Mike Romeo was recently picked by the Montreal Expos in the 41st round of the Major League Baseball draft. It marks the first time in almost 20 years that an LHS ballplayer has been drafted by the majors; the last being Joe Giordanella, who was chosen by the Minnesota Twins in 1983.

Romeo was a top-notch third baseman and a dangerous power hitter for the Bulldogs’ varsity team this year. His impressive statistics included a .433 batting average, five home runs, 20 RBI and an amazing .519 on-base percentage.

Under the guidance of coaches Michael Canobbio and Richard Rogers during his high school career, Romeo became a two-time All-League player and won the PAL Gold Glove Award at third base.

Scouts who followed Romeo throughout the season watched a talented young player with strength and speed, two characteristics that signify major league potential. Among his capabilities, Romeo hits with power to all fields and runs the 60-yard dash in under seven seconds.

He is currently playing summer ball for the Long Island Reds, one of the best amateur teams on the Island. His skills have also earned Romeo a substantial athletic scholarship to attend Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida this fall.
