Attorney to Matherson:
Show me the money
by Carolyn James
The long, drawn out saga of the Oak Beach Inn property, its colorful and often recalcitrant owner Robert Matherson and the Town of Babylon may not be quite over. Though the sale of the property to the Town has been finalized, Matherson’s former attorney, Hugh Leitch, of Babylon has taken legal action against Matherson saying he owes him $365,000 in legal fees. Leitch filed the lawsuit with State Supreme Court and Judge James Catterson ruled this month to put the $365,000 that Leitch says he is owed in escrow until the case can wind its way through the courts.
Matherson is represented by the law firm of Keenan and Powers of Hauppauge. The attorney’s declined to comment on the case.
The Oak Beach Inn property was initially slated to become first a hotel and retail stores and then an upscale condominum complex, both of which received significant public opposition. Federal, state, county and local town officials then put together a proposal to bring the site in public hands. The Town of Babylon is in the final stages of coming up with a plan for development and use of the land as a beach front park.
