Masonic Lodge pays tribute
by William Dalgarno

The magic was there when Babylon Masonic Lodge paid tribute to Debbie Basile and the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

First Richard Bateman, a Grand Lodge officer, explained the history of the DeWitt Clinton Award, the highest award that can be presented to a non-Mason who has shown leadership and caring within the community.

Next, a special friend Jon Mason, introduced Basile to those present and spoke about the achievements attained by the Coalition under her leadership. The Master of Babylon Lodge Joseph Von Nessen, on behalf of the Lodge, presented the DeWitt Clinton Award to Basile along with a monetary donation to help continue the work of the organization. This was followed by a presentation of flowers, and words of appreciation by Barbara Baker on behalf of the members of the B.B.C.C.

Basile responded by thanking everyone for the success of the Coalition and hoped for even better results as we strive for a cure for this dreaded disease. In response she was accorded with a standing round of applause from those in attendance.

Among those paying tribute to Basile were Congressman Steve Israel, State Senator Owen Johnson, Legislator David Bishop, Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone, Councilman Wayne Horsley and Tax Receiver Corinne DiSomma all of whom spoke of the determination and dedication of the honoree.

Charles Spencer brought greetings from the Chamber of Commerce followed by a tribute from Doug Chapey and message of regret from Gordon Werner who unable to attend due to an emergency.

The last speaker was Jeff McCausland, director of the Suffolk County Special Olympics who congratulated Basile for the achievements in her field of expertise and for being recognized by the Lodge.
