Art students achieve success at state review
On Saturday, April 20, nine Babylon High School art students participated in the New York State Portfolio Project under the auspices of the New York State Art Teachers Association and all received Distinguished Performance rating. The nine students, ranging from seventh to twelfth grade, were Valerie Doescher, Brandon Hodges, Rachael Mann, Juan Mendez, Dan Stoecker, Stephanie Egan, Liz Flamenbaum, Meredith McCaslin and Mark Mihopulos.
Participants must submit a portfolio consisting of a specified number of original works of art prepared according to strict guidelines. The students must give an oral dissertation on each piece covering aesthetics, art principles and art history. In addition, one work of art must also be supported with a written critical analysis.
Celeste Topazio, the students’ portfolio coach stated, "All participants worked extremely hard. They put in many hours after school and at home to prepare. Their talent and diligent efforts were well rewarded."
