North Babylon students participate in Vicarious Voyage

The students in Anna Maria Montuori’s second grade class at the Parliament Place Elementary School, North Babylon, participated last semester in a unique program called Vicarious Voyage Around the World." The program exists in recognition that in an increasingly interdependent world, there is a vital need to advance the exchange of knowledge and understanding between cultures.

Three students on board the ship S.S. Universe Explorer "adopted" the class and communicated with the children from various ports of call, among them China, Japan, Vietnam, Brazil and Cuba. Items sent were culture packets from these nations which included newspapers, menus, maps, stamps, postcards, photos, artifacts and personal messages about the students’ experiences. These materials were incorporated into numerous and diverse lessons and projects related to multicultural, international education, such as map studies, oral/written reports on the various countries, letter writing, international food festivals, global literature and art projects.

The children gained insights of the world and its people in ways that textbooks and encyclopedias could never provide. They became more culturally aware and by better understanding diversity, more tolerant. It truly made the world "smaller" for the children. In addition, they are looking forward to a visit from Kelly, one of their pen pals who lives in Virginia and asked if she could visit the class to share more of her experiences with the children first hand.
