SUMPWANS GARDEN CLUB

The April 8 meeting of the Sumpwams Garden Club was opened by outgoing President Marie Capitano leading the Pledge of Allegiance. She thanked officers and board members for their efforts and support during her presidency and presented them with a trowel and a plant because "We don’t have beauty without digging." Her thought is that gardeners are "Keepers of the Earth."

Design Invitationals were done by Pat Cahaney, Margaret Daniel, Jackie Marsden and Edith Moran. The hostesses were Kitty Graziano, Antoinette Maiorini, Jackie Marsden and Ethel Michel.

Marie Skelly, a long-time, active member is taking a year off. She has opened her home for parties and plant sales in addition to being responsible for raffle baskets at the annual luncheon.

Ada Catalano, past president, presided over the installation of officers and standing committees. The new officers are Marion Russell, president; Vi Taylor, vice president; Kitty Graziano, recording secretary; Ethel Michel, corresponding secretary and Jane Muchmore, treasurer. Marie Capitano and Gracie McPherson are directors.

The meeting continued with a program, Once Upon a Rose, by Marion Russell, a consulting rosarian and award-winning member of the L.I. Rose Society. She presented each of her new officers and committee members with a long-stemmed rose.
