Babylon Travelers Club

The Babylon Travelers Club met March 18 in the home of life member Mrs. Althea Baldwin with Mrs. Jocelyn Pisani as hostess.

Associate member, Mary Valentine, presented a paper on A Tradition of Crafts highlighting the work of craftsmen and artists of Tibet and Nepal. Unique methods of producing rugs, paper and buttons along with the intricate earrings in wood, metal and precious stones were discussed. Some Tibetan beads and a paper wallet from Nepal were shown.

The music and drama committee played excerpts from the movie Kundun, showing native dances and a tape was played of the singing bowls of Tibet. You are almost certain to hear folk songs in the hills. If you are traveling with sherpas and porters, your own crew will probably entertain themselves, and you, with songs and dances to the accompaniment of a two-headed drum called a madal. If you are staying in hotels, the entertainers may be villagers, a trekking group’s porters or the children of the hotel owner.
