Gladys Zack Collins, 94, longtime resident of Babylon

Gladys Zack Collins, a longtime resident of Babylon, passed away on January 30, 2002 at the age of 94 in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Mrs. Collins was born January 18, 1908 in Queens, New York to Joseph and Kathryn Grendon Zack. She graduated from Babylon High School in 1925 and Jamaica Training School in 1929. She studied on a graduate level at both St. John’s University and New York University. She was a public school teacher for 43 years, teaching in Lindenhurst for six years before moving to the New York City public school system. She retired from New York City in 1974 as an assistant principal. She loved teaching and children and maintained contact with many former students and parents, said her daughter Nancy Zack.

"She loved Long Island, especially the beach — even in the winter," she said. "She also enjoyed traveling, and visited the European continent, China, the Panama Canal, Bermuda, England, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Alaska."

Mrs. Collins was a member of the Babylon Travelers Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Babylon United Methodist Church. She was a talented pianist and organist, and was the organist at the Babylon United Methodist Church for many years. She loved music, singing and bridge.

She was a loving and generous mother and grandmother said her family. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Zack, and a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kristina and Christopher Hooper, all of Pound Ridge, New York. She is also survived by a niece, Ann McCaslin, and a nephew, Robert Zack, and their families, all of Maine.

The family plans to have a memorial service for Mrs. Collins at the United Methodist Church in Babylon at a future date.
