Julian P. Wilder, veteran, professor and Copiague resident
by Carolyn James

One of the most vivid memories that Ian Wilder has of his father Julian P. Wilder is of a conversation he had with him recently. The elder Wilder related how, as a young American soldier in Japan following World War II, he was struck by the suffering of those living in war-torn countries, particularly the children. It was an impression that was to direct and motivate the man for the rest of his life.

"He told me that it was that experience that made him become a teacher," said Wilder, a profession that allowed him to influence generations of Americans and to help them understand the atrocities of tyranny and the price Americans have paid to secure freedoms not only for Americans but also for people around the world.

Lt. Col. Julian P. Wilder, (USAF-CAP), a resident of Copiague, died at his home April 5, 2002. He was 77 years old. A Memorial service for Mr. Wilder is being scheduled for next month at Adelphi University, where he was Assistant Professor of Education.

In addition to his son Ian, a local attorney from Amityville, Mr. Wilder is survived by his wife Carole, and his other son Jonathan, as well as by his daughters-in-law, Rina and Kimberly. His grandchildren Joshua, Ethan and Jeremy also survive him. Carole Wilder is a former sales representative for the Babylon Beacon and a member of the Town of Babylon’s Environmental Commission for many years.

Mr. Wilder was an Assistant Professor of Education at the University’s Garden City and Manhattan campuses since 1967, educating thousands of teachers across the New York metropolitan area by both his knowledge and his example. He was a proponent of open, child-centered classrooms; core curriculum programs; and use of computers in the classroom for decades.

He served with the U.S. Air Force Civil Air Patrol New York Wing Director of Aerospace Education and was a Public Affairs Officer, as well as President of New York State Aerospace Education Council. He served as Past President of Brooklyn Tech Alumni—Long Island Chapter—and was a multi-year participant in Shodor Computational Science Institute, North Carolina.

While in the Air Force, he served aboard U.S. Navy Transport ships as a Merchant Marine Radio Operator in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School, graduating in 1941 and received his master’s degree from New York University in 1953.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Julian Wilder Memorial Scholarship, School of Education, Adelphi University, 1 South Ave., Levermore Building, Room 207, Garden City NY 11530. The scholarships will go to upperclassmen at Adelphi who are studying to become teachers. It will be awarded by University’s School of Education.

"This is the closest memorial to Julian’s wishes, which will help students preparing to become teachers," said his wife Carole. "That was something he devoted his life to."

Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 9, 2002, Lindenhurst Hebrew Congregation Cemetery, Breslau Cemetery Complex, Lindenhurst. The arrangements were under the direction of I.J. Morris Funeral Home.
