Babylon High School's record-breaking After they broke every single relay record in school history this past winter, the Babylon track team will look to continue its success under first-year coach George Schroeder, as the spring season gets underway. In addition to regular meets against other schools, the Panthers will compete in the Distance Medley, the mile relay and the two-mile relay at the 108th annual Penn Relays, a world-famous event held in Philadelphia by the University of Philadelphia. In the Distance Medley, a 1,200-meter, 400m, 800m and 1,600m race, the team of Joe Larsen, Henry Mathias, Cory Zwerlein and Greg Brink will be gunning for a spot at the Outdoor National Championship. Their performance at the winter D.M.R. was the best amongst public schools on Long Island and ranked Babylon 36th in the nation. "I am extremely pleased with the efforts and results of the past winter season," praised coach Schroeder of his boys, "and look forward to an even more productive outdoor season." Babylon’s mile relay squad which includes Mathias, Greg Farley and Tim Johnsen, will be in top form after posting the 2nd fastest time, 3:31.5, in Suffolk County during winter competition. Larsen, Zweilein, Brink and Caleb Long team up in the two-mile relay. After losing to Northport at the State Qualifier Meet this past February, you can be sure this foursome (ranked 76th in the U.S.A.) will be seeking redemption. By adding new assistant coach Tom Valle, a field events specialist, "the team promises to be the finest in school history," boasts Schroeder. And as he has said to his athletes many times, "I am here to build an empire!"
