Lookin for witnesses to Lindbergh’s flight

As part of its gala opening festivities scheduled for May 20, The Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchel Field is searching for residents who were eyewitnesses to the takeoff of Charles Lindbergh’s historic flight from Long Island some 75 years ago. The Cradle of Aviation will hold its grand opening to coincide with the three quarter century anniversary of Lindbergh’s legendary crossing of the Atlantic and will feature the flight of a full scale operational replica of Lindbergh’s famous flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis.

"Contemporary accounts report that more than 3,000 people came out to see Lindbergh take off on that rainy Friday morning," said Ed Smits, chief executive officer of the Cradle of Aviation Museum. "We have already identified a number of people who witnessed Lindbergh’s take off at 7:52 that morning. It is our goal to have as many of those who witnessed this moment in Long island and aviation history join us when we reenact Lindbergh’s flight over the Cradle of Aviation Museum."

Anyone who would like to contribute an account should call Tom Gwynne at 516-572-4025.

Many of those who came out that day may have been as young as seven years old," said Smits. "It was a life defining moment for many and it is only fitting and appropriate that those individuals join us as honored guests as we mark the occasion by opening the doors to this magnificent museum."

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is located on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard off Exit M4 from the Meadowbrook Parkway and adjacent to Nassau Community College.
