Fundraising efforts from the West Islip school district

The organizers of the West Islip School District fund known as Lionheart, created to assist local families directly affected by the September 11 World Trade Center have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and their fundraising efforts.

The children and their parents set up lemonade stands in front of their homes, joined forces for garage sales, organized car washes and bake sales, sold T-shirts and more, proceeds of which were donated to The Lionheart Fund. Committee leader Mikki McCullough said, "The response has been heartwarming! West Islip is a generous community."

Other fundraisers for this worthy cause are in the planning stages. Scheduled for Thursday, November 8, is a spectacular, vocal and instrumental concert to be held in the high school.

The Lionheart Fund is channeled through the high school’s Student Senate. Checks may be mailed to the fund at 100 Sherman Avenue, W. Islip, NY 11795. Please make the check out to the West Islip School District and mark in the memo section: for Lionheart. Cash may be donated to the principals of all nine schools as they are members of the Lionheart Committee.

For more information, call Ms. McCullough in the district office at 893-3200, ext. 340 or the office of School-Community Services at ext. 371.
