Football:
Panthers claw Wildcats, 42-0
by Tony Spota
The Babylon Panthers scored on each of their first six possessions as they beat the Shoreham Wildcats 42-0 at Shoreham this weekend. Babylon remains unscored upon while chalking up 109 points after three games. The defense continued to shine, limiting the Wildcats to 71 yards net rushing and only seven yards in the air. Shoreham didn’t get a first down nor reach beyond its own 35-yard line until its last drive in the final period.
Panther quarterback Brandon Schultheis deftly controlled the ball in a solid attack. Twin blasters Trevon Rodney and Jon Carr moved the ball well, eating up yardage in Babylon’s unstoppable ground game. Rodney starred on both sides of the ball. He carried 15 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns on runs from the 19 and the 2. He scored a 2-point conversion, recovered a pair of fumbles and hounded the Wildcats with frequent tackles, often in their own backfield. Carr rushed behind the powerful Panther wedge for 73 yards on 14 carries and a TD from the 4.
Offensive tackles Jay Egan and T.J. Maffei got into the scoring binge. Egan scored from the 5 on Babylon’s first drive which went 64 yards on ten plays. He was moved into the backfield as a blocking back and took a handoff through left tackle for the TD. Maffei did the same capping Babylon’s last drive. The Panthers went 59 yards before he piled in from the 1. Schultheis joined the scoring with a 7-yard keeper around the right side to cap Babylon’s fourth drive. Drew Peters kicked for four extra points and punted 54 yards into the Shoreham end zone. Babylon is at Bayport Saturday 2 p.m.
