Babylon Girls Soccer:
Panthers win 3,
Burbige nets 5
by Tony Spota

Led by Lisa Burbige’s hat trick, the Babylon Lady Panthers opened the first week of October with a 3-1 victory October 2 over the Lady Knights of Glenn. The first of Lisa’s three goals came on a pass from Allison Funk and the others were unassisted. Caila Sciascia scored Glenn’s goal. Stefani Gallagher had seven saves for the Panthers. Glenn keeper Marissa Glaser had fifteen. Amy Van Nostrand and Hanna Wardell made their varsity debut.

Babylon then blanked the Southampton Mariners 3-0. The Panther forwards attacked throughout as Burbige, Funk, Jill O’Callaghan, Shannon Murray, Cate Carbonaro, Caitlin Schellhorn, Vicky Casaburri and Jenn Lodico maintained possession for long stretches of the contest. The Mariners didn’t take a shot until late into the opening half. Funk scored in the 14th minute on a cross from Murray. Burbige hit later after a pass from Merry Jones. She boomed it high into the net from 27 yards out. Late in the game, Kelly Marmo scored on a penalty kick. Three other Panther blasts hit the posts. Gallagher and Kendra Schloen shared the shutout, the latter making Babylon’s only save. Emma Woodward had thirteen for the Mariners.

The Panthers then beat the Mount Sinai Mustangs 3-2, October 5, Jessica Mueller and Sheena Mendez hit for Babylon’s first two scores. Burbige got the gamer with her fifth goal of the week. Gallagher had six saves.
