Babylon Panthers
blank Greenport 33-0
by Tony Spota

The Babylon Panthers romped for the second straight week as they beat the Greenport Porters 33-0 September 28. Babylon’s rock-solid defense stifled the Porters’ highly touted rushing game, holding Gerald Crenshaw to a net 16 yards on the ground. Crenshaw is attempting to set the county career rushing record this year. The D chalked up four sacks as Jay Egan stormed in for two and T.J. Maffei and Trevon Rodney had one apiece. Each half ended with a Panther interception (Drew Peters and Danny King). Linebacker Miguel Soto contained the outside rush as a host of defenders ate up the Greenport backs.

The offense maintained control throughout. Tailback Rodney carried seventeen times for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Jon Carr added 75 yards on 12 carries. The line led the way with center Tim Halvorsen flanked by guards Paul Lopez and Ric Otero, tackles Maffei and Egan and tight end John Axmacher providing the punch. Babylon’s first score came on a 75-yard drive taking ten plays. It was capped when Rodney banged in over the left side from the 2-yard line. Their next possession lasted fifteen plays and went 88 yards. Quarterback Brandon Schultheis faked inside and ran right, sneaking in from the 5 for the score. Peters kicked the first of his three extra points. The third drive went 80 yards and also paid off. Schultheis hit Peters on a right slant over the middle moving the Panthers from their own 36 to the Greenport 30. From there, Rodney twisted and spun his way around the right side, broke three tackles and raced it in.

In the second half, Rodney shucked off three tackles again on a rush moving the pigskin thirty yards to the Porter 13. He plowed up the middle from the 8 for the TD. The last tally came when Schultheis hit John James on a deep circle over the middle. James gathered it in and sped for paydirt. The play covered 55 yards.
