Lady panthers tie,
then win big
by Tony Spota
The Babylon Lady Panthers came from behind to tie the Bayport Lady Phantoms 1-1 in a thriller September 25. Bayport broke a scoreless tie in the 46th minute when Elissa Sinensky banged in a cross from Brianne McLaughlin. The Phantoms defense stalled the Panthers until the last eight minutes of regulation, but the Cats woke up and took it from there. Bayport dodged a bullet when Lisa Burbige hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute. Five minutes later, Kirsten Schmid lofted a pass down the right sideline and Burbige took it, dribbled in, and gunned from ten yards out for the score. Neither side could tally in the double overtime. Babylon keeper Stefani Gallagher had nineteen saves, bringing her varsity career total to 150, surpassing the mark of 146 set by Lauren Nuckel (1997-2000). Lydia Holmberg had five saves for Bayport. Jill O’Callaghan made her varsity debut for the Panthers.
Babylon then blanked the Amityville Warriors 4-0, September 26. The Panthers scored in the 29th minute as Merry Jones took a back pass from Jessica Mueller and booted it in from 33 yards. Seconds later, Caitlin Schellhorn dribbled to the front of the net and struck it home. Late in the half, Allison Funk took a cross from Katie Marmo and hit it in and Burbige scored from eight yards on a pass from Funk. The Panther defense was steady and the Warriors penetrated the big box only twice (in the 39th and 76th minutes) as keepers Gallagher and Kendra Schloen shared the shutout without having to make a save. Kim DiGiulio had nineteen for Amityville. Schloen, Kelly Marmo, Kirsten Krollmann (an exchange student from Cologne, Germany) and Amy Van Nostrand made their varsity debut for the Panthers.
