Former Met visits West Islip students

Former New York Met and two-time Cy Young Award winner, Brett Saberhagen, recently visited the Westbrook Elementary School in West Islip to help kick-off the 2001 PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) program. This year’s theme is "baseball," and Saberhagen’s inspiring and motivating talk with the students detailed the importance of reading. He also spoke on how reading has helped him succeed as an athlete, father and citizen. Later, he was joined by resident Robbie Dromerhauser and together they donated scholarships for their American Sports Academy to Westbrook Schools. The two scholarships will be awarded to students who participate in all five weeks of the PARP program and demonstrate good citizenship. Additionally, as part of PARP’s incentive to read, a faculty-student softball game is planned, as well as a field trip to see the Long Island Ducks.
