Booking for books in Deer Park
To encourage students to read, John Quincy Adams School, in the Deer Park School District, held its annual Scholastic book fair. Kindergartners and first and second graders scoured the shelves for books of interest. There were many to choose from as their selection included Clifford, Franklin, Arthur, Winnie the Pooh, Scooby Doo, the Rugrats and Harry Potter as well as books about animals and sports. The most popular choice was the Junie B. Junes series as students bought more than one.
Since the goal behind the book fair is educational, only reading material was available for purchasing. No posters were sold. The fair helps introduce the students to independent reading. "They’re picking out books on their own," PTA President Peggy Viering stated. "We encourage them to choose books which interest them instead of someone else doing the selecting."
