by Lisa Fazio

Susan Grossi (nee Coppola), a resident of West Islip for 15 years, died on March 10, 2001 from lung cancer. She was 46 years old.

Mrs. Grossi was born in the Bronx on November 26, 1954. Before her residency in West Islip, Mrs. Grossi lived in the Bronx, West Hempstead, and Brooklyn.

Mrs. Grossi was the head cook at Oquenock Elementary School in West Islip for ten years. Her husband James of West Islip said, "My wife loved kids and cooking. Once she started working for the elementary school, a lot of the kids started to buy their lunches instead of bagging them."

Mrs. Grossi was a beautician at Shear Instincts in West Islip, a caterer in her spare time, and an active member of the Oquenock Elementary School PTA for five years. She also loved music, especially disco music, and dancing. Mrs. Grossi also enjoyed going to Robert Moses beach.

Her husband James recalls that they loved going to the beach and listening to music. "She liked her disco music and I liked my oldies music. We both developed a taste for each others’ music." He also said about his wife, "She was a very outgoing and loving person. The town knew her as Ms. Sue."

Mrs. Grossi is survived by her husband James and daughter Danielle, both of West Islip. She is also survived her stepson Joseph Grossi of North Massapequa, her parents Edward and Rose Coppola of Brooklyn, and her brother Frank Coppola of Park Ridge, New Jersey. "She will be missed by all," said Mr. Grossi.

Mrs. Grossi was reposed at Lang-Tobia-DiPalma Funeral Home at 255 Higbie Lane, West Islip. A funeral mass was said at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in West Islip. Interment followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Babylon.
